AVENTURA, Fla. (November 2, 2018) – The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center fall season continues this November with the best of comedy, popular music, international films and ballet.
The City of Aventura presents Slow Burn Theatre Company’s staging of Hedwig and the Angry Inch on Saturday, December 1 at 2 and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, December 2 at 2 p.m. The 2014 Tony Award®-winner for Best Musical Revival, this genre-bending, fourth-wall-smashing musical sensation, with a pulsing score and electrifying performances, tells the hilarious, harrowing, and essentially uplifting story for anyone who’s ever felt different. It’s told through of one of the most unique characters to ever hit the stage: Hanschel, a “slip of a girly-boy” from communist East Berlin, becomes the “internationally ignored song stylist” known as Hedwig after a botched sex change operation. With a little help from her band and her back-up singer Yitzhak, Hedwig examines her quest for her other half, for love, and ultimately for her identity. Rolling Stone magazine proclaims Hedwig and the Angry Inch is “the best rock musical ever!” This show is intended for mature audiences. Tickets are $45–$49
The Aventura International Film Series presents The Divine Order on Tuesday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m. From writer-director Petra Volpe, this Winner of the Audience Award for Best Narrative Film at the Tribeca Film Festival tells the uplifting story of an unassuming and dutiful housewife living in the Swiss countryside as the issue of the women's right to vote is about to be put before the male voters in 1971. Well-liked by everyone before she begins pugnaciously campaigning, she refuses to back down and convinces the women in her village to go on strike while she makes a few startling discoveries about her own liberation. Not rated, this film is shown in Swiss-German with English subtitles. The Aventura International Film Series presented by the City of Aventura is hosted by Shelly Isaacs who introduces the film and leads a post-screening discussion. Tickets are $12
The City of Aventura presents a Smart Stage Matinee performance of Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida’s The Nutcracker on Friday, December 7 at 10:30 a.m. Set to Tchaikovsky’s popular score based on the tale of Ernst Hoffmann, the critically acclaimed performance is choreographed and directed by renowned Ballet Master Vladimir Issaev, with an enthusiastic ballet company featuring its team of professional dancers performing the principal roles, as well as a community cast made up of local character artists and children for the party scene. The City of Aventura presents Jake Ehrenreich's A Treasury of Jewish Christmas Songs with two performances on Sunday, December 16 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. As the Broadway, film, TV personality, recording artist and star of the hit show A Jew Grows in Brooklyn, Ehrenreich explores the many great Christmas songs that were written by Jewish songwriters. The show features a world class jazz quartet, behind the scenes stories, beloved music and his legendary ability to engage and entertain. Ehrenreich performs exciting new interpretations of “Christmas Time is Here,” “Let it Snow,” “White Christmas,” “Rudolph,” “I'll be Home for Christmas,” “Silver Bells” and many more. Also featured are rare and exclusive interviews with songwriters Sheldon Harnick (Fiddler on the Roof), Charles Strouse (Annie and Bye Bye Birdie) and Alan and Marilyn Bergman (“The Way We Were” and “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers”). Black Box Productions’ Stand-Up Comedy Series presents Sarge's Chanukah Chutzpah Tour...Kiss My Mezuzah on Saturday, December 22 at 8 p.m. A high-energy and multi-talented entertainer, Sarge is a triple-threat: considered a musical piano savant, stand-up comedian and talented singer. He sings in his own voice, and in a dozen others including Harry Connick Jr., Sammy Davis Jr., Lionel Richie and Stevie Wonder and also delivers spot on impressions of Marv Albert, Mike Tyson, Kermit the Frog and Gilbert Gottfried. This event may include adult language and content and is not appropriate for children under 12. Tickets are $41.50–$46.50
Starring Steve Solomon and presented by the City of Aventura, My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish, & I’m Home for the Holidays on Saturday, December 29 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, December 30 at 2 and 7 p.m. The City of Aventura presents the star and creator of one of the longest running one-man comedy shows in history in Steve Solomon’s My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish, & I’m Home for the Holidays. It’s holiday dinner at Grandma’s as Solomon shares more wild and hilarious stories and characterizations about his family, friends and other folks whose sole purpose was to drive him into therapy in the first place. Variety says, “Steve is Alan King, Billy Crystal, a smidgen of Don Rickles and George Carlin all thrown in!” Tickets are $45–$49
